Highest Paid Advanced Practice Nursing Professionals
Certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNA) are some of the highest-paid advanced practice nursing professionals. Salaries vary greatly by region, type of facility, number of years in practice and sub-specialty. A study done by Merritt Hawkins & Associates in 2009 showed that the average CRNA salary was $189,000. This is higher then the average salary in 2006 which was $160,000/year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics in May 2009 the average annual salary for a registered nurse was $63,750. This shows why so many nurses are starting to lean more towards the field of nurse anesthesia. It is important to note that starting salary for a CRNA tends to be closer to $112,000-$135,000/year.
Factors Effecting Salary:
Work experience
State employed
Clinical setting
1099 vs W2
Anesthesia group size
Medically directed vs Independent practice
Location Matters Most
These are the major factors that determine the salary of a CRNA. Location seems to be one of the more important factors when it comes to pay scale. If you are looking to live in a bigger city you should expect to receive a slightly lower yearly income do to the fact that there will be a surplus of CRNAs in that area. Because competition for jobs is higher employers will tend to pay less. CRNAs working in rural areas will get paid more for the opposite reason. Less CRNA’s will be located in these areas, so in order for employers to attain good CRNAs they will be forced to pay higher salaries. If you are interested in a specific area that has a high competition of CRNAs, then we recommend choosing a top anesthesia program in that area. If you are able to do the clinical portion of the program locally, it will help you network with local hospitals and increase your chances of getting a job offer.
