Program Summary:

The Master of Science in Nurse Anesthesia (MSNA) degree is awarded by Newman University’s CRNA school. The curriculum is 24 months, and applicants are baccalaureate-prepared registered nurse that want to become a nurse anesthetist. The didactic portion of the program focuses on A&P, pharmacology, biochemistry, chemistry, physics, and pathophysiology as they apply to the field of anesthesia. The clinical portion of school teaches a variety of anesthesia methods and procedures for every type of surgery. On average students will spend about 50 hours each week in the classroom and clinical site. CRNA Program Requirements:
  • License: The applicant must have a Bachelor of Science degree in nursing. The applicant must be a current unrestricted registered professional nurse.
  • Work Experience: 1 year minimum full time employment as a registered professional nurse in a creitical care setting
    Accepted: SICU, MICU, CCU, or burn unit
    Not accepted: OR, ER, PACU
  • GPA: Must have a GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
  • GRE: GRE with a minimum score of 290 (combined verbal and quantititative)
  • Certifications: ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support)
    PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)

Prerequisites:

Statistics course (includes descriptive & inferential statistics
) Undergraduate nursing research course or equivalent.

Interview:

Interviews for the NU Nurse Anesthesia Program are held the last 2 weeks of January by the Admissions and Progressions Committee, made up of the Program Director, Assistant Director, Clinical Director, Medical Director and the CRNA Clinical Coordinators of primary sites. The interview includes both personal and professional questions, including clinically based questions and scenarios. Interviews are 30 minutes on average. Successful applicants should be notified by mid-February for admissions to the August class. 50-55 interviewees are selected each year.
